Don’t write off the timing as luck. Timing is a big part of the art. Back when I was in a photo club, we had talks by nature and wildlife photographers Art Wolfe and Lee Mann. Both told stories of seeing the right place in the wrong light and scheduling many revisits to the spot before finding the light that takes the photo from snapshot to WOW!
Get one of those little Gorilla Pods. It’s almost impossible to get the right depth of field and focus with a hand-held shot.
